# White Clover

> White clover (Trifolium repens) is a creeping perennial broadleaf weed that forms spreading mats in lawns and garden areas. Learn how to improve turf density, remove small patches and choose treatment suited to your lawn type.

*Trifolium repens*

White clover is a low-growing perennial legume that spreads across the ground using creeping stems called stolons, which root at the nodes as they travel. Each leaf is made up of three (occasionally four) oval leaflets, usually with a pale V or crescent-shaped mark near the base, arranged on a long thin stalk. Flowers are white to pale pink, ball-shaped clusters held above the foliage on their own stems, appearing mainly from spring through to autumn in most parts of Australia.

As a legume, white clover has root nodules that fix nitrogen from the air with the help of soil bacteria. This means it can thrive in soils that are too low in nitrogen to support dense turf grass growth, which is one reason it often becomes noticeable in lawns that are under-fertilised or patchy.

It is widespread across temperate and cool-season turf areas of southern and eastern Australia, and is also deliberately grown as a pasture and green manure species in agriculture. In lawns it is generally regarded as a weed because its spreading habit and different leaf texture disrupt the uniform look of turf, and its flowers attract bees, which can be a concern in areas where people walk barefoot.

Management relies on maintaining a dense, competitive lawn through regular mowing at the correct height, adequate nitrogen fertilising, and addressing any compaction or drainage issues that thin out turf and give clover room to establish. Hand removal can work for small, isolated patches, but because stolons root at multiple points, any fragments left behind can regrow. Selective broadleaf herbicides registered for use in turf are commonly used for larger infestations, applied when the clover is actively growing.

## How to identify

White clover is usually first noticed as irregular patches of lighter green, broader-leafed growth within the lawn that look and feel different from the surrounding turf grass, especially when mown.

- **Leaf check:** Look for the distinctive three-leaflet clover leaf with a pale crescent or V-mark near the base of each leaflet, on long stalks rising from creeping stems.
- **Flower check:** Small, round, white to pinkish flower clusters on upright stalks above the leaves confirm identification, especially in spring and autumn.
- **Stolon check:** Gently part the turf and look for horizontal, rooting stems running along or just under the soil surface, a key feature distinguishing it from upright weeds.
- **Patch pattern:** Clover often colonises thin, bare or low-fertility areas first, so its presence can indicate patchy turf density or nitrogen deficiency rather than being the sole cause of lawn problems.*Lookalikes:* Suckling clover (*Trifolium dubium*) and black medic (*Medicago lupulina*) have similar three-leaflet foliage but smaller, yellow flowers rather than white. Oxalis species also have three leaflets but they are heart-shaped rather than oval, and oxalis flowers are yellow, pink or white with five distinct petals rather than a rounded cluster.
