These buckets are also a secret weapon for growing finicky plants like Maidenhair ferns or Dendrobium orchids. Since there are no bottom holes, you can easily convert them into a self watering reservoir system.
Use a drill or a soldering iron to make four small holes about 5cm up from the base. When you water, the bottom 5cm acts as a reservoir. The moisture wicks up through your media (we recommend a mix of clay balls, perlite, and quincan gravel), providing the consistent hydration these plants need to thrive.
This method is a lifesaver during a hot Aussie summer. It can reduce your watering frequency to once every few days and prevents your plants from drowning during heavy rain, as any excess water simply flows out the side holes.
