Cat’s Ear Weed (Hypochoeris radicata)

Common Names

Also known as cat’s ear, false dandelion, flatweed, hairy cat’s ear, and rough cat’s ear.

Description

Cat’s Ear is a perennial weed with a deep, thickened root system. It grows in a rosette of hairy, lobed leaves that resemble dandelions. Flower stalks are 15–60 cm tall, leafless, and branch near the top, producing bright yellow flower heads. The plant contains a milky sap and spreads via wind-dispersed seeds.

Similar Species

Often mistaken for common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale).
