Battling Weeds: Dealing with Nutgrass in your Home Lawn

Nutgrass, also known as nutsedge, is a weed that can be a nuisance for many homeowners. This sedge grass can appear in your garden in several ways, such as through a newly laid turf, landscape supplies, topsoil, or even from your local nursery. It's important to note that no one is immune from encountering this weed in their garden.

However, there is a solution to this problem. Glyphosate-based sprays may cause Nutgrass to turn yellow, but they are not effective at removing it. Instead, using a Halosulfuron-Methyl-based herbicide like  Tempra can help eradicate Nutgrass effectively – although you may need more than one application.

Here are the basics of using Tempra to combat Nutgrass:

  1. Mix 1.3 g of Tempra per 10 L of water.
  2. Apply 10 L of the mix per 100 square meters.
  3. Always use a wetter like Spredmax or Wetter 600 to help Tempra penetrate the leaf.
  4. Apply to actively growing weeds when new leaf growth has reached a minimum of 5 cm on Nutgrass.

Using a wetter surfactant with Tempra is crucial, as it improves the coverage and penetration of herbicides into the foliage of weeds. When combined with a herbicide like Tempra, Spredmax, or Wetter 600 can enhance the effectiveness of the treatment, making it easier to eliminate Nutgrass from your lawn. To ensure uptake, add one of these non-ionic surfactants at 20 mL per 10 L of water for hand-gun or knapsack application.

Always read the label and follow the instructions carefully when using any product on your lawn. This will ensure that you use the product correctly and effectively while avoiding potential hazards to you and your lawn.

Nutgrass can be a nuisance for many homeowners, but it can be effectively controlled with the right products and techniques. Adding Tempra and a wetting agent like Spredmax or Wetter 600 to your glyphosate or selective lawn weeder can help eliminate Nutgrass, keeping your lawn healthy and beautiful!
